Grove Class of '39 Holds 50-year reunion |
The Grove High School Class of 1939 held its golden anniversary banquet Oct. 20 at Paris Landing State Park Inn. Name tags with each class mem- ber's picture from the 1939 year" book were presented upon arrival, beginning at 5:30 p.m. The tags were made by Gilbert and Sue Hurt of Chattanooga. Joe and Virginia Routon were in charge of decorations, with help from several classmates. Routon made calligraphy signs leading to Ellington Hall at the inn. An arrangement of blue and white car- nations was on the head table. Table decorations included blue and gold streamers, white potted chrysanthe- mums wrapped in blue foil and tied with gold ribbon, blue wooden G's, with gold programs and anniversary plaques on easels. Snow then presented "Remember When," signed by all classmates, to Woodrow Dill. The the 1939 year- book was dedicated to Dill. Anna Martin made the roll call of classmates, their spouses and guests. Gilbert Hurt then gave a humorous reading, "Aging is When." Cal and Maxine Orris presented a skit on why she wanted to attend the reunion. Orris then led the group in singing songs from the 1930s and '40s. Perry Bigham led the memorial service after lighting a single white candle surrounded by 21 miniature plastic foam heads heads. representing the deceased members. He then read an original poem written for the occasion. Snow then discussed future plans for the class, including a mini- reunion set for Oct. 6,1990, at Paris Landing State Park Inn. The 55-year reunion will be held in 1994. The white potted mums were given as door prizes. Names were drawn by Geraldine McCutcheon and read by Dill. Plants went to Mar- garet Snow Williams, Jane Veazey Sturdivant, Ruby Finch Haines, Clarence Redden, Maxine Etheridge Orris, John H. Floyd, Virginia Ruck- er Routon, Alfred Dick, Albert Anderson and Mary Virginia Miller Dean. A breakfast was- held at the inn Oct. 21. Forty-two attended the buf- fet. Classmates then traveled to the Grove Tower. This was the first time some of the class members had been back to Grove hill. |
