Bill McCutcheon is People's Choice

Bill McCutcheon has always
had a flair for writing and an ear
for music.

While a student * at Grove
High School, he began what has
become a long career of news
reporting by writing for the
school newspaper, The Comet.
He was the assistant editor his
junior year and became the edi-
tor of the paper his senior year.

Also while a high school
junior, McCutcheon became a
part-time disc jockey for radio
station WTPR.

McCutcheon took joumalism courses at the University of Tennessee at Martin and UT Knoxville.

"I've always loved writing,
reading and photography, and all.
types of music," he said.

He was in radio sales and pro-
gramming for WTPR for several
years, then was news director at
WMUF and later news director
for WTPR before taking a job at
The Post-Intelligencer in 1996.

McCutcheon won the Read-
ers' Choice award for Best
Reporter this year, and has won
the award for the previous two
years as well.

"I think all of our reporters are
the best, and I'm very fortunate,
like I've said before, to be able
to make the switch from radio to
strictly news and then be able to
come to the newspaper at my age,

especially with all of the technical
advancements," he said.

The thing he enjoys most about
being a reporter is "meeting and
getting to know interesting people
and telling their stories."

He also enjoys being able to
keep the public informed about
current events in Henry County,
and likes getting to know the-
people he talks to a great deal
while covering his reporting
beats. He has played a crucial
role in publicizing Relay for Life
events the last few years,

McCutcheon also is a DJ as
a sideline job and has more fun
doing it now than ever. In August
of next year, he will have been a
DJ for 50 years.
