A graveside service for
former Henry Countian, teacher and librarian Margaret Veazey Sykes of Orange
City, Fla., is planned at 1 p.m. Saturday in Walker Cemetery. Rob Martin and
Paul Veazey will officiate. Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Friday and 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Saturday at McEvoy Funeral Home. Sykes, 97, died Thursday, Jan. 31, 2013, at her residence. Born Aug. 15, 1915, in Henry County, she was a daughter of the late Joseph Taylor Veazey and Eunice Verner Tyler Veazey. Sykes attended Murray State Teachers College. She was a longtime member of First United Methodist Church and served as United Methodist Women’s president for four years. She also was a teacher and librarian, active member of the Quota club and a 12-gallon blood donor. She was an active organizer of the Veazey reunions in the county and attended national reunions as well. Survivors are a son: Paul W. (Jackie) Sykes of Deltona, Fla.; and a sister: Dorothy Veazey Gordon of New York. Another sister, Jane Veazey Sturdivant, also preceded her in death. |
