Walter G. Inman ~ Obituary

The funeral service for retired Holley carburetor plant comptroller Walter Griffey Inman Sr. will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at McEvoy Funeral Home.

Joseph A. Geary of First United Methodist Church will officiate. Burial will follow in Maplewood Cemetery.

Chosen as pallbearers are Albert Walker, Clarence Hampton, Bill Jelks, Bob Collins, Charles Marlow and Jerald Sykes. Honorary pallbearers will be Caldwell Boden, Dan Nealon, Carl Norwood, Everett Moody and Virgil Wall.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. today and after 11 a.m. Thursday.

Inman, 81, died Monday, March 10, 2008, at St. Francis Hospital in Memphis.

His wife Sarah Seay Inman survives. They were married on June 25, 1949.
Born Nov. 29, 1926, in Tiptonville, he was a son of the late W.O. and Elizabeth Griffey Inman.

Inman retired after 33 years at Holley, when the plant closed here.

A member of First United Methodist Church, he served on the church’s board of stewards and was a Sunday school teacher for many years.

A graduate of Grove High School, he earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Vanderbilt University. He taught at Murray State University for two years. He was a World War II U.S. Navy veteran, an agent with the FBI and a former member of the Henry County Court.

His wife said he was an avid gardener, tennis player and fisherman.

He also leaves one daughter: Ann Inman (Donald) Plunk of Bartlett; two sons: Walter G. (Barbara) Inman Jr. of Tampa, Fla., and Paul Douglas (Deborah) Inman of Greensboro, N.C.; four grandchildren: Jim Plunk of Bartlett, Liz Plunk (Matt) Gower of Starkville, Miss., and Clayton and Jacob Inman, both of Greensboro; and numerous cousins.

He also was preceded in death by a brother: W.O. “Bill” Inman, who was a medical doctor and surgeon.

Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, the Shriners Burn Center, the Salvation Army or First United Methodist Church.
