A slim and trim racing machine named Bonehead fended off a vaguely competitive field to swim away with the title of grand champion at Saturday’s Catfish Races.

Handler Mike Chandler pumped his fist in the air in supreme victory as Bonehead crossed the finish line, cementing his place in catfish history.

The winning fish was sponsored by Blake Chandler of Surgical Consultants of Paris, and cheered to the finish line with the help of Mike Chandler’s wife, Teresa, and his brother Mark.

About 200 spectators and handlers crowed the south side of the courthouse lawn to watch the 17 qualifying heats, four semifinals and the final race.

Ebenezer Von Zinkovic, who was sponsored by Dan Williams, finished second.

Other finalists in Saturday’s race included Kukinator, sponsored by Luke Williamson, and Caroline’s Cat, entered by Caroline Barnett. Others who earned the right to compete in the semi-finals included the Cipro, entered by Jim’s Pharmacy; AMVETS Mr. 45, AMVETS; The 6:45 No. 16, Optimists Club; Gavin, Ray Harding; Sun Fish, Kris Bailey; Tax’ E. Cat XVI, Beasley & Company; Patrick O’Hare; Bitsy Cat, Mayer’s Grocery; Suzie Q , Terri McMeanamen; Cat o’ War, Becky Bancox; Balin Boy, Kentucky Lake Urology; International ESIL Cat, the ESOL class.

According to race coordinator Michael Williams, the event raised almost $2,000 for the Henry County Literacy Council.
