O. "Hamp" Hampton
|Clarence O. Hampton, 83 of Cordova
passed away on Saturday July 25, 2009 at Baptist Memorial Hospital.
He graduated from Grove High School in Paris, TN. He received his undergraduate degree from Lambuth University along with two master's degrees from University of Memphis and Sacret-Vanderbilt University respectively.
Hamp, as he was affectionately known, is survived by his wife of 58 years, Anne Rooks Hampton; his two sons, Bob Hampton of Nashville and Hamp Hampton, III of Montclair, NJ; his two daughters, Helen Hampton Jenkins of Memphis and Rene Hampton Brady of Flower Mound, TX; his eight grandchildren; and his sister, Martha Hampton Gaddie of Jackson, TN.
He began his professional career as Conference Youth Director of the Methodist Memphis Youth Conference, then later moved to Memphis to become the Executive Director of the Wesley Foundation at the University of Memphis. He then worked in many positions in the student affairs department at the University. He retired as Dean of Student Life after 22 years at the University.
He was a member of Christ United Methodist Church, the White Station Optimist Club, and a board member for the Porter Leath Children's Center. He was also past President of the Lambuth University Alumni Association and the Executive Director of S.M.A.R.T., an inner city outreach program.
Hamp touched thousands of lives throughout his life by his willingness to extend a helping hand in his volunteer work, as a college dean, and as a steward of the Methodist Church. He cast a long shadow which will not be easily forgotten by many people.
The funeral service will be held 2:00 pm Tuesday, July 28th, at Memphis Funeral Home-Poplar Chapel with visitation beginning at 12:00 noon. A private interment will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery.
